A reworking of the old Border ballad of Tam Lane, the knight held in thrall by the Queen of the Fairies until rescued by Janet, his " ain true-love''. In this version, Janet is the daughter of a retired general, Sir Henry Montgomerie, and Tom Lane is an airman. With the help of Haliburton, an old family servant, and Dr. Whitadder, the local minister, Janet rescues Tom from the Gay Carline. The play blends the magic and romance of the original ballad with a modern comedy of manners.
