Item details

Davie Saunders, tending his sheep, finds an abandoned baby and takes it home. He and his wife, Jean, decide to adopt it. Slanderous tongues get busy: the child is obviously dying, and Jean is anxious to have it baptised. The minister and the kirk session refuse to countenance the baptism of this "child of sin'', as they call it. The young mother appears and, sharing in the old belief that a child which dies unbaptised goes straight to eternal damnation, pleads for its baptism. Finally Davie brings peace to her heart by baptising the child

himself. This play with its strong conflict between love and fear has many tense and moving moments but has also a good leavening of humour.
