Item details

The inn parlour looks bright and cosy in contrast to the storm raging outside. The occupants of the room have been listening tensely to old George relating the story of "The Mad Squire", whose ghost, riding on horseback, is supposed to haunt the old castle nearby. Suddenly, amid wild gusts of wind, the sound of galloping hoofs is heard. All are terrified. Nearer and nearer home comes the rider and stops at the door, knocks loudly and demands admission. The Stranger goes out to see to his horse and the others discuss his identity ? is he The Mad Squire or the Devil himself? The landlady remains doubtful, so the Stranger shows her his wallet, bursting with notes. Finally, he is voted to be a fine, generous gentleman, obviously very rich, but when he departs leaving his wallet with the landlady, the notes prove to be bills advertising various Shakespearean plays and the grand Stranger a travelling play-actor. This can be played with great dramatic effect and there is a fine climax. All the parts are worth while and there are plenty of laughs.
