When Violet Cavendish is at work a girl arrives unexpectantly at her empty cottage and is recognised as her niece by Miss Grant, a well-meaning neighbour. Left alone, the girl drops the pretence and it is no pleasant surprise awaiting Violet's return but a conniving escaped prisoner.
